18th March 2017 saw me taking a quick walk up Roseberry Topping (320m, 1,050 feet)

We were heading from Middlesborough to Whitby when I noticed the hill on the skyline, a quick word with the driver (Otherwise known as the OH) and we were heading into the car park in Newton under Roseberry.

Whilst the driver headed towards a cup of tea I headed up Roseberry Lane and into Newton Wood.  Here I was confronted with the first steep part of the climb – stairs!

Roseberry Topping/Newton Wood stairs

At the top of these stairs the path to the right follows a stone path to the summit, this is very steep and also a very popular route.  I turned left at this point and followed a quieter path.  I headed through a gate following the Brant Gate path along and around the base of the hill it climbed gently around the base until I reached a path leading to the summit.  The path was a grass track and although fairly steep it wasn’t as brutal as the stone path.

Path to Summit

Just below the summit the path joined the main track up to the summit over the stones.

“We may roam far and wide before we see.  A finer sight than here from Rosebury” George Tweddell 1870.

The rocks that make up Rosebury Topping date from the Jurasic period and if you look carefully you can see fossils in the rocks.

Captain Cook regularly climbed Roseberry Topping and its said that these adventures that inspired him to become an explorer.

From the summit I headed down the stone path and back to the car park, the whole walk of 2 miles taking just under an hour.

We then headed to the Kings Head Inn for a relaxing drink.
